Update #1: Skate Park Refresh

On Sunday, October 8th we met up with Phyllis Moraga, parents, kids, graffiti artists and community members to talk about our plan to refresh the Skate Park in Harmon Park.

Here's the summary:

This week the Parks team will be power washing the Skate Park to clean the surface and attempt to remove and lighten current graffiti so only one coat of paint will cover it. If that doesn't work, then we'll consult with professional power washers or look into painting it with the appropriate surface paint used in skate parks before the artists start sketching on Thursday, October 19th* and painting through the October 22nd.

We recognize that weather could impact these proposed dates so that we may not be able to complete the project this year. If that is the case, we will plan to get as far as we can and then pick this back up in the spring if necessary. The other consideration is how quickly we can order the paint and supplies and find out if they will be received in time to meet the above dates.

The collective team will be creating a 4-foot space around the greater bowl area starting at the top edge which will be obviously marked for the graffiti artists to use, as well as some other black-framed blocks in the additional skating areas. The artwork to be painted will be kid appropriate (anime characters, cartoon characters, cool images that kids like, positive messages, etc.).

Parks will be seeking donations and sponsorships for supplies such as paint, rollers, brushes, etc. Anyone donating or sponsoring this project will be included in a press release that will be sent out and on signage by the Skate Park.

For more information, please read Phyllis Moraga's post below for other details. Reach out to her or the Park office if you would like to be involved!

Please know that everyone is welcome to help with this! If you have any questions, input or want to be involved as an artist or non-artist, feel free to private message us, email operations @ eurekaparks.com, stop by the office or give us a call at 479-253-2866.

Thanks so much for your interest and support!

ARTISTS & NON-ARTIST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

You’re talents and time are needed for a local art project at the Skate Park inside Harmon Park. With the help, funding, and collaboration of Eureka Springs Parks Department, we are repainting the skate park floor. The floor is covered in graffiti, not all of which is bad, but there is a lot of sex and drug related graffiti that is simply not appropriate for children or young adults.

The idea is to create numerous colorful images, messages, and icons on the upper portion and outer walk, and to leave specific framed areas inside the large bowl for future graffiti. Parks is going to power wash the park floor in the next week or so.

Weather permitting, we hope to gather artists on Thursday, October 19th and Friday, October 20th, to draw (in outline) various images on the concrete with chalk.

On Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd (weather permitting) we need artists and non-artist volunteers to put color to the chalk outlines.

If you can be available for any period of time, on any of these days to help, please contact Phyllis Moraga through Messenger, or text your name and the date you can volunteer to her at 479-244-0943.
